Cyber Warfare & Networks

In our highly connected, and electronic, world one of the greatest challenges is in the area of safeguarding our electronic computing and communication resources. Networks of information are embedded in many aspects of our modern life: air traffic control, radio and TV signals, cell phones, operation of utility systems providing electricity, gas and water to our communities, and so on. Attacks on any of these networks have serious implications for our society today.

With increasing threats in the areas of cyber-crime and cyber-terrorism, more attention is being focused on how to prevent and protect these systems. Current security measures focus on a “perimeter defense” approach that is akin to putting our fingers in the dyke to plug the hole. Engineers need to develop innovative solutions that can protect these systems with software that have security measures built in, or via the detection of vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.
