Biomedical engineering is an emerging field where engineering principals and design concepts are being applied to medicine and biology. Innovations such as using software and a radar gun to diagnose concussions, weaving optical fibres into bandages to monitor healing, wireless medical monitoring devices to assist in rehabilitation and recovery, computer-assisted surgery are just a few examples of work being done around the world in this field.

Research into biomedical engineering is important to the Canadian Armed Forces in ensuring the health and well-being of Canadian Military personnel, veterans and their families. RMC and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering participate in the Canadian Institute for Military & Veteran Health Research that brings together researchers from across Canada in a variety of fields to form a network for knowledge sharing and exchange.
